A two-day hands-on workshop titled “From Model to Medicine: Exploring Zebrafish, Organoids & 3D Bioprinting”

The Department of Pharmacology, NRI Institute of Medical Sciences (NRIIMS), conducted a two-day hands-on workshop titled “From Model to Medicine: Exploring Zebrafish, Organoids & 3D Bioprinting” on 23rd and 24th January 2026. This workshop was the first of its kind to be conducted in the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and was attended by delegates from various parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

The program has been awarded four credit hours by Andhra Pradesh Medical Council and started with inauguration and lighting of the lamp by Dr. A. Bhagyalakshmi, Principal, NRIIMS. The workshop aimed to familiarize faculty members and post graduate students with contemporary experimental models and emerging technologies used in translational pharmacological research.

Day 1: Experimental Models and Toxicity Assessment

The first day focused on the fundamentals of alternative experimental models. Sessions covered ethical guidelines, zebra fish husbandry and breeding, routes of drug administration, and metabolic and cardiovascular disease models. Hands-on demonstrations included blood collection techniques and toxicity assessment using adult and embryo zebra fish, enabling participants to understand practical applications in drug safety evaluation.

Day 2: Neurological Models and Emerging Technologies

The second day emphasized on advanced disease models and future-oriented research platforms. Participants were introduced to neurological models including anxiety, depression, epilepsy, and Alzheimer’s disease, along with larval staining and wound healing assays. The workshop concluded with interactive sessions on organoids and 3D bioprinting, highlighting their potential in personalized medicine and next-generation drug development.

The workshop was conducted under the guidance of Dr. P. Jagadeesh, Professor and Head, Department of Pharmacology as the Organizing Chairperson, with Dr. P. Priyadarshini, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, as the Organizing Secretary and Dr. Prasanth K.K., Founder and Director, Simbioen Labs and Scientific Services Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, along with his team as the resource faculty. Dr. P. Viritha, Professor and Head of Pulmonary Medicine served as APMC observer.

The workshop was conducted successfully with enthusiastic participation, positive feedback from the delegates and was concluded with vote of thanks by Dr. K. Ram mohan, Assistant professor, Pharmacology, NRIIMS.
