Overview
The Department of Biochemistry is located in the first floor of College building. It has a practical lab and a research Lab fully equipped with all instruments required for practical’s and other experiments.A Clinical Biochemistry lab located in the first floor of the hospital building.
The main objective is to impart quality education to all the students. The Department has well qualified and experienced faculty. The Department is equipped with state of the art laboratories with modern equipment to cater to the needs of both undergraduate and post graduate students. In addition to the MBBS course, the Department and its faculty also handles courses for PGs, BDS, B.Sc MLT, BPT, B.Sc Nursing courses and paramedical courses.
Innovations in Teaching
The lecture halls are equipped with latest audio visual aids. All the theory classes for both MBBS and Post graduate students are delivered using Power Point slides. The Department follows continuous evaluation of undergraduate students by conducting Seminars, Viva-Voce exams, Quiz Tests, Multiple Choice Questions and slip tests periodically.
In order to enlighten and to improve parent staff relations and academic performance in the students the Department is conducting

- Information about the progress of the student
- Counseling for low performers
- Small group teaching programmes
Library:
In addition to the Central Library of the institute, the Department has a library with 185 books.
Vision
- To be at the forefront striving for excellence in training, in the field of community health, by rapidly adopting highest standards of practice and newer initiatives in medical education.
- To instill interest in research among students, by making accessible, relevant resources and tools.
- To develop and maintain peripheral health centers catering to the evolving health needs of the communities, while conducting various outreach activities with focus on health promotion and prevention
- To establish association and extend support to various Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations in delivering high quality health-care services to the communities
Clinical Biochemistry Lab
Another major and important activity of the Department of Biochemistry is to take care of the clinical investigations of the attached Hospital. All the faculty of the Department also works in the clinical laboratory on roaster duty. The clinical laboratory is run 24 hours a day 365 days and the technicians work in three shifts
Clinical laboratory is now equipped with the most modern equipment which include:
- Aspen Chem 300 - Fully Automatic Chemistry analyser
- Biosystems 200 - Fully Automatic Chemistry analyser
- VitrosECi – Hormone analyser
- ABL 800 – ABG analyser
- Two electrolye analyzers
- One Semi-automatic analysers
- One BioRad D10 for HbA1c
In addition to a regular internal quality control, the clinical lab is enrolled with external quality assessment programs from CMC Vellore.
Outreach
“Reaching out to the communities”
Outreach services has been the mainstay among multiple activities by community medicine department.
These services are primarily being provided through the peripheral centres under the department –
Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) & Urban Health Training Centre (UHTC).
Services across the comprehensive health care spectrum (preventive, promotive, curative &
rehabilitative) in the form of outpatient, inpatient & referral services, emergency health care,
health awareness & education campaigns, school health programmes are provided on a regular basis.
Important health days are observed all along the year, supplementing the regular activities.
Also,
noteworthy of mentioning, the department constantly create and provide opportunities to the
undergraduates & postgraduates to be part of all the activities, enriching their learning experiences,
while making them competent to operate on an independent basis in the future.
